Lady. Lassie. Fido  These once-popular dog names are being eschewed by today’s pet owners. Instead, dog-lovers are taking cues from trendy human  (hello, Hudson and Chloe), pop culture (we see you, Elsa) and their pup’s heritage (while they didn’t make the top of the list, historical names such as Ninotchka for a Siberian husky and Seamus for an Irish setter are gaining serious traction). Here are the latest and greatest names for new four-legged family members according to the Canadain Kennel Club.

For stunning beauties such as the Afghan Hound are considered by many to be one of the most elegant breeds. Having the tall, lengthy build of the sighthounds but the long, beautiful coat of the setters creates a dog that appears to float while walking. You can always shorten it to Rory.

Chloe

This name offers a certain European cachet and is a particularly adorable option for French breeds such as Papillons and Bichon Frises. Umlaut optional, Chleo is of course short for  Cleopatra the name of one of the most powerful women in history.
